An unexpectedly beautiful book which combines grief, creativity, obsession, home spaces and, naturally, bird migration.
After suffering a bereavement, Sara began a project of handcrafting bird models of an endless variety of species. The time, physical mess, research and fixation that it required became consuming. Musing on the desperation and solace that comes from making something that is real with our own hands, this book becomes a personal reflection on Sara’s artistic processes and her emotional journey.
Told in short essay format, Sara’s writing is unique. She details the confined humdrum of domestic life and interlaces it with facts about the epic migration of birds. I loved the way she portrays the messiness of art and the ways in which it can help us to heal. I did shed a tear, or two. – Katrina
